Balboa Dance Workshop

with Einar and Gabi

suitable for total beginners and beginner-intermediate Balboa dancers

What is Balboa?

Balboa is a dance that originated in Southern California during the 1920s and 1930s. It is a swing dance that is danced in close embrace. The art of Balboa is in the subtle communication within the couple, including weight shifts, which most viewers cannot see. As a result, Balboa is considered more of a "dancer's dance" than a "spectator's dance".

Designed to take up only a small space, the dance was originally a response to overcrowded ballrooms. Balboa is often perceived as a restrained or introverted dance, with most movements occurring below the knees; however, part of its appeal is its variations on turns and twirls. Almost completely forgotten for many decades, nowadays the dance has seen a resurrection and is widely growing in popularity in Europe and across the world, with small but active dance scenes in cities as Los Angeles, Cleveland, Stockholm, Moscow, Zurich, London or Paris to name but a few...

When? Saturday 25th of May 2013 from 13.00 to 17.00 (including breaks)

Where? Ecole de Theatre, Rue de Neudorf, 595L (opposite of Deloitte, next to Scanshop) L- 2020 - Luxembourg-Neudorf

As an example for the dance you can watch following video clip It shows a Balboa Dance competition http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kCuTjOlQ98c

Cost: 25 Euros

About Kris and Laura

Kris has been a music nerd for as long as she can remember. Her father introduced her to the jazz greats when she was a little girl, and she discovered blues pioneers like Bessie Smith and Robert Johnson long before she'd ever heard of partner dancing. So when she started dancing swing and blues in 2007, she fell in love all over again.

Kris knows how to set a good mood and brings great energy to the classroom. Passionate about her students' success, she guides them through the details while keeping the big picture in mind: fun social dancing with great technique.
With her background in teaching astrophysics, Kris knows how to break down complex information into logical and easy to execute bits for her students. Her approach to dance is methodical and precise – something she also focusses on in her work with the SwingStep teaching team – and she has an excellent feeling for what the students need in order to achieve the next level in their dancing.

Laura has been fascinated by music and dance since she was a small child. Starting at only four years old she moved through ballet, ballroom, latin, capoeira, and tango argentino. But none of these dances can compare with the way blues and swing gripped her from her first night on the dance floor. She was immediately inspired: by the multifaceted music, by the freedom, and - as a connection junkie at heart - by the melting connection between lead and follow.

Laura is an empathic presence in dance classes. She cares about her students and gives them a great balance between freedom and technique. Her greatest talent and joy as a teacher is personal feedback: she loves working with students individually during class, honing in on the details that allow them to make lasting improvements.

It's all about Communication!

Lindy Hop workshop with Andreas and Sonja
On Sunday, 21st of October

Dancing is all about communication on the dance floor to your partner & the music - without words!

Therefore in this Workshop we will learn about how to communicate with each other (technique), how can we create a fun communication (Style and fun moves) and who is talking when (Contact Lindy)?

Level: Beginner/Intermediate and Intermediate (no total beginners admitted, if you have been dancing for a few weeks it should be fine, so some previous lindy hop experience is required).

Cost: 40 Euros for the whole workshop or 25 Euro for either only Part 1 or  only Part 2

Teachers: Andreas and Sonja are very enthusiastic lindy hoppers from Cologne. Andreas started Lindy Hop dancing 6 years ago, Sonja became, after dancing Salsa for almost 3  years, an addicted Lindy Hopper as well. Since 1 ½ year they are teaching and dancing together and travelled a lot by attending many international Workshops. During this time they developed their own way of teaching, which focuses with fun and easiness on technique and understanding. Their motto is: If you understand how the basic principles of Lindy Hop work, you easily can grasp every move and even more develop your own."

The themes of the workshop will be:
-  Part 1: Technique and Styling, 14.00 - 16.00
Here we will focus on the basics of our communication, lead & follow and the always mentioned stretch. But we want to look good, while we communicate, don t we? So Sonja & Andi will give as some nice Styling tips and tricks. For him, for her, for both…..

- Part 2: fun moves, contact lindy - who is leading now? 16.30 -18.30
In this Part we will pep up your dance with some funny easy moves and also will show how not only the leads can talk, but also the follows can and how the lead can respond.  This is communication at its best.

To register please send an email to swinglux@gmail.com
You will only receive the payment information after registration. (please do not send money upfront without registering beforehand, your registration will need to be accepted first, depending on place and leader/follower ratio).

The workshop takes place in
